Four months since Google came out with the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for its devices, Android users might finally get their hands on the highly anticipated maintenance release for the new system soon. Rumors are circulating that the Android 5.1 Lollipop is arriving to Nexus devices starting this week.
While no official word was given by Google or anyone connected with Android Lollipop, a known leakster revealed that his sources noted the possibility of Nexus units getting the 5.1 update this month.
According to Venture Capital Post, tipster Artem Russakovskii shared that Google is rolling out the update on Nexus 7 tablets beginning this week.
A post on Russakovskii's Google+ profile noted, "Here's a rumor from one of our solid sources. The Lollipop MR1 (Android 5.1) will start rolling out to Nexus devices starting with the N7 (probably 2013) this week, barring anything unexpected."
The update is meant to target battery issues that Android users have experienced ever since they downloaded and installed Android 5.0 Lollipop.
His post went on to detail, "This release is supposed to make Android battery smooth again, which is something you may have already spotted from videos of Android One devices running it. You're going to want to install it... Google's been having some issues with battery life, which explains the delay, and unless they're already resolved, could possibly delay the rollout>"
However, Russakovskii reiterated that "later this week" is the only info he has regarding the release.
It seems that the update is not just limited to Nexus 7 devices. The article added that Nexus 6 devices under a Verizon contract might soon be able to access the upgrade as well.
Meanwhile, rumors of Android 5.1 Lollipop coming to Moto G units circulated when Google+ user Damian Junior showed photos of an Android 5.1 test done by Motorola on Moto G handsets.
While Motorola confirmed the arrival of the update to its unit, it added that "chipset requires more effort," on its post in social network Twitter.
Meanwhile, HTC One users may also be able to have their first touch of the much hyped update as it was reported that developers are working hard to bring the update to devices this month.
A report on CNET noted that Nexus 4 and 5 smartphones could already install the upgrade along with Nexus 7 tablets under contract with T-Mobile. Nexus 6 phablets under Sprint could also update their operating system as the Android 5.1 Lollipop is already available for the said unit starting March 11.
