‘Baywatch’ Movie Release Date, Plot, Cast News: Dwayne Johnson to Star as Hunky Lifeguard, Film Takes a Comedic Turn

After several months of waiting for any news on the rumored "Baywatch" movie adaptation, we finally have updates and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is set to star while "Horrible Bosses" Director, Seth Gordon, has been tapped to direct.

According to Variety, Johnson who recently led the blockbuster quake film, "San Andreas", will also produce the upcoming film through his Seven Bucks Productions with Montecito Pictures.

"Baywatch" Movie will focus on Johnson as a very serious lifeguard who is forced to partner with a young hothead to save their beach from the destructive hands of a villainous oil tycoon.

What makes this big screen adaptation quite surprising is that the project is said to take a comedic route instead of the soapy-drama feel of the original TV series which starred David Hasselhoff. In a report by The Hollywood Reporter, "the project hopes to tap a similar tonal vein as the recent 21 Jump Street movies, which took a beloved show, turned it into an action comedy, and skewered it with a fondness to make it an acclaimed hit franchise".

Variety adds, "Paramount has been trying to get the right ingredients in place in order to move forward with the film, and Gordon is the sort of director the studio has been looking to over the years. Gordon's hit vulgar comedies like "Horrible Bosses" and "Identity Theft" have made him a popular director at the studios amid moviegoers' craving for R-rated comedies. Paramount would hope for similar results."

Director Seth Gordon will work on the script written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift (Freddy vs Jason). The "Identity Thief" director was originally attached to Sony's "Uncharted" but has been reported to have left the project.

While there has been no official release date reported for the "Baywatch" Movie, it has been suggested that Paramount will most likely have it out on theaters in Summer 2017.
