The Memphis Grizzlies are now looking for a way to strengthen their roster after experiencing two devastating defeats from the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors. Meanwhile, the Miami Heat is trying to reduce their luxury tax bill and is reportedly trying to trade Mario Chalmers, who earns $4.3 million, for the 2015-16 season.
Mario Chalmers has been with the Miami Heat since he started his NBA career in 2008. He played well as LeBron James' point guard and started taking the starting lineup in 2014 until the Heat took Goran Dragic as their point guard. Chalmers has an average of 19 minutes play per game with 5.5 points and 3 assists per game.
Chalmers is a veteran with NCAA championship and two NBA titles on his record, which makes the Grizzlies think that he is the best player for them to trade. Chalmers' contract with the Heat will end this year, and he currently has a price tag of $4.3 million.
It seems that the Memphis Grizzlies and the Miami Heat can make a good deal since the Grizzlies need someone like Chalmers while the Heat needs to slice their luxury-tax bill. According to ESPN, trading Chalmers will not only help the Heat with their tax but also ensure that Josh Richardson and Tyler Johnson keep on playing in front line for spot minutes behind the team's backcourt starters.
The Grizzlies, on the other hand, may include Beno Udrih in a trade that might benefit the Heat. Udrih is a free agent by the end of the season and now earns $2.1 million. He averages 3.8 assists in almost 17 minutes per game, playing as a point guard to Mike Conley Jr.
If this trade happens, according to Bleacher Report, the Miami Heat will be taking in a 33-year-old member who has played in the league for 12 years already. Chalmers is only 29 yrs. old and this means it would be better to have him signed to a long-term deal, compared to signing Udrih, a backup point guard who is approaching his mid-30's.
