Celebrity Home: Historic John Barrymore Estate Listed for $42.5 Million

A historic Beverly Hills mansion that is built in 1920s and was bought by actor John Barrymore, is currently listed on the market for $42.5 million.

Said mansion called Bella Vista, is designed by architect John Byers for film director King Vidor who worked on films that include “War and Peace,” “Ruby Gentry,” “The Fountainhead."

The Spanish-style home sits on a 3.44 acres lot which consists of 6,976 square feet featuring seven bedrooms and eight baths. The home is said to have "retained for posterity of its golden Barrymore years" with its opium den above the master suite and the redwood tree trunk floor that is seen in the pub. In the house, many of the Hollywood elites would visit it and would be entertained in the area, according to Press Release Rocket.

The mansion also features an octagon-shaped living room, an oversized second library, and a study room. On the grounds, there are two guest cottages as well as new two-story guest houses that contain two additional bedrooms, two living rooms, and two kitchens, Top Ten Real Estate Deals noted.

Aside from that, what make the property attractive are the beautiful landscaping with meandering paths, stone walls, and garden statuary. It also has a swimming pool which boasts a rock waterfall.

Apparently, the house is indeed a luxurious dwelling that fits for a star and has many spaces for recreation and entertainment. The listing agent for this property is Stephen Shapiro of Westside Estate Agency in Beverly Hills.

When Barrymore bought the mansion, he was in the verge of his career as one of Hollywood’s most prolific entertainers. He expanded the grounds of the house by buying nearby properties and he housed his collections in this place.

The actor lived in the house until he died in 1942. After that, the house was bought by Tony Scott, a well-know director for movies “Beverly Hills Cop II,” “Top Gun,” “Crimson Tide,” and “Days of Thunder.” Since Scott died three years ago, the house is currently sold in the market.
