A saltbox home built before the US Constitution is now for sale in South Windsor, Connecticut for only $75,000.

The property was first featured on the "Cheap Old Houses" Instagram page. The house was built in 1697, nine decades before the US Constitution was written. The home was listed on Zillow, with agent Julie Corrado of Coldwell Banker Realty overseeing the listing.

The home features three bedrooms and two bathrooms and sits on a 0.33-acre plot. The home is being sold for $75,000, the listing stated.

For perspective, the median sale price of a home in Connecticut is $460,200 as of August 2024, according to data from Redfin. For single-family homes, the median sale price is $507,600.

Is the Home's Price Negotiable?

Per the Zillow listing, the price is in an "as-in state." It also noted that the listing conveys everything on the property as it is.

The buyer who purchases the saltbox home would need to invest in renovating the property to bring it back to life.

Hopeful buyers would not be able to purchase the property through a conventional mortgage loan. Other options include cash or applying for a construction/renovation loan.

The main house has 3,088 square feet of livable space. It also has three levels, the upper level where the bedrooms are located, the main level where the dining room and living room are, and a full, unfinished basement. Buyers would also have an attic, accessible through a hatch.

Appliances included in the sale are an oven, a range, and a water heater, the listing noted.

What Is a Saltbox Home?

The saltbox home features a style distinct from the architecture of residential homes in New England during the colonial period, especially in the 17th century. The name derives from the wooden box used to store salt, which had a similar slanted roof design with one side long and sloping downwards. Saltbox homes are traditionally built using timber framing and oak clapboard sidings.

Saltbox homes, particularly the roofs, were designed to be more efficient in shedding snow and rain.
