On Sept. 13, "Super Mario" will turn 30 and the world's number one selling video game franchise still gets as much love today as it did during its first release in 1985.

According to Stuff, for its 30th anniversary, Nintendo has announced a new game called "Super Mario Maker" which will be available in stores a day before the anniversary. This new title is said to be a way to commemorate and celebrate the 30 years of existence of a beloved game franchise. Here is a rundown of "Super Mario" titles that became milestones for the franchise:

Super Mario Bros. 1985. Mario and Luigi were already featured in a game called "Jumpman" released in 1981. But it was this title that made them a household name all over the world and it changed the face of video games forever. "Super Mario Bros." was groundbreaking in its controls as well as the design of the enemy AI.

Super Mario World. 1990. When the more powerful Super Nintendo console came out, "Super Mario World" was the chosen showpiece for what the new hardware can do to the popular game. It would be considered the best 2D Mario game even today but also the last before a new generation of gaming consoles came.

Super Mario 64. 1996. This would be another breakthrough for the franchise as it proved to be one of the smoothest transitions from 2D to 3D by any major video game title of that period. This title was one out of only two games released for the Nintendo 64 but nevertheless it was a huge success.

Super Mario Maker. 2015. According to The Straits Times, this new title from Nintendo will be released for the latest Wii U Console. As a way of saying thank you for the 310 million units of the game sold in 30 years, "Super Mario Maker" lets players create their own world for Mario to play in. They can even share it with other players online.
