"The X-Files" executive producer and series creator Chris Carter recently corrected cast member David Duchovny's comments that Dana Scully was his character Fox Mulder's wife.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Carter said that Fox and Dana were never married, and the two never walked down the aisle.

"They were together but never married, so that was news to me. You saw them in the second movie 'The X-Files: I Want To Believe' - they were obviously together under one roof. But I am here to announce that this is not the case coming back," he said.

During a previous interview with Crave Online at this year's New York Comic Con, Duchovny referred to Gillian Anderson's Dana as his onscreen wife.

Meanwhile, Carter also spoke with The Hollywood Reporter to dish on what fans can expect from the upcoming sixth-episode revival of the hit show.

"We do it in an interesting way. We play with that relationship in the event series. We put some of the tension back in that was relieved by them being together," Carter said of Fox and Dana's relationship.

"It added to storytelling opportunities. It's something that I came up with; I had been thinking about it. There was always talk of breaking them up if we did another movie," Carter added.

Unfortunately, it seems that the old lovers wouldn't get back together in the upcoming installment.

"In the beginning of these six episodes, we seem to be estranged. But I don't know where it is going. I really don't know. I'm trying to think what was the end of the sixth episode... It's yet to be determined," Duchovny said at Pittsburgh's Wizard World Comic Con.

"The X-Files" revival will premiere on Fox starting on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016. The series will also feature Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner, Robbie Amell as Agent Miller, William B. Davis as Smoking Man and more.
