Allegiance has started to dominate Broadway as they received a lot of impressive reviews from various reviewers and other theatre goers. It's element of entertainment and history has set them off among other musicals.
Among the reviews they received is from The Hollywood Reporter. They said, "The knowledge that the story was inspired by Takei's childhood hardships in the Japanese-American "relocation centers" of World War II adds significantly to the emotional impact."
A review form The Wrap mentioned that "Rather than focusing on the injustices suffered by Japanese Americans, this new musical finds its voice in the characters' varied responses to discrimination."
NY Times also wrote that, "The show wants to illuminate a dark passage in American history with complexity and honesty, but the first requirement of any Broadway is to entertain. While well-intentioned and polished, "Allegiance" struggles to balance both ambitions, and doesn't always find an equilibrium."
As reported by Broadway.com, "Allegiance" is based from the published book of Marc Acito, Jay Kuo and Lorenzo Thione. This show is a multi-generational tale of one Japanese American family's love, optimism and heroism.
The creative and production staff behind this historical musical is lead by Jay Kuo in the music and lyrics. He's music was very mesmerizing and according to sources, his songs were a major factor in reconnecting the chemistry between Lea Salonga and George Takei's characters. The show is directed by Stafford Arima and choreographed by Andrew Palermo. The amazing set designer, Donyale Werle, also did a great job in bringing a perfect set into stage together with Alejo Vietti in costumes, Howell Binkley in lighting direction and Kair Harada for the sound production.
Allegiance Broadway Production is starred by the known Star Trek Actor, George Takei as Sam Kimura; Tony Award Winner, Lea Salonga as Kei; the veteran actor from Rent, Telly Leung as young Sam; Katie Rose Clarke, who was known as Glinda in the Broadway Smash Wicked in 2010, as Hannah; Michael K. Lee as Frankie Suzuki; Christopheren Nomura as Tasuo Kimua; and Greg Watanabe as Mike Masaoka as cited by sources.
Allegiance started its preview last October 6 and had their opening gala on November 8 at the Longacre Theatre.
