Who says that only girls can play Barbie dolls? It's no secret that boys also play with one, but how often do we see them in a campaign?
Mattel, the company behind the Barbie dolls, released a limited edition "Moschino Barbie" this month and sold out under an hour. Moschino's Creative Director, Jeremy Scott, took to Instagram to express their happiness for the project, “Moschino Barbie sold out in less than an hour! Wow! Barbie and I thank u for all the love!”
The boy seemed to be like Scott, and who probably also has an interest in fashion at an early age. Scott told WWD, “The thing I love most about Barbie is that she is the ultimate muse, she’s worn every style and design imaginable and at the same time she’s had every possible profession you can dream of.”
Along with the release of the new Barbie dolls, people also took interest on the commercial of the toy where it featured three children playing with the dolls. People thought that the children who would star in the commercial would automatically be young girls, but surprisingly, it featured a young boy playing with the doll as well. Talk about breaking stereotypes. You can watch the commercial on Moschino's Offical YouTube channel.
The fierce and chic doll is priced at $150 and was sold on Net-a-porter.com. They made around 700 pieces and were completely sold out. Some of the dolls are now re-sold at eBay and costs around $400 to $800.
According to Vogue, the highest valued dolls are those with collaborations with designers, such as the Moschino Barbie. Other designer-collaborated dolls include a Karl Lagerfeld version, complete with the designer’s high collar and silvery mane and costs around $4,000, and a very rare 1998 Vivienne Westwood edition that costs around the $2,800 range. Sounds like a good investment for Barbie doll collectors.
