"The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 lead star Ian Somerhalder recently talked about Nina Dobrev's exit from the show last season.
In an interview with Variety, the actor seemed to have thrown shade at his ex-girlfriend when he said that not much has changed since she left. What Somerhalder meant was that a lot of the fans of the hit The CW series thought the show won't survive without Elena Gilbert.
However, a few seconds into Season 7, the actor said he believes that "The Vampire Diaries" still has the same formula.
"I personally think everyone thought it was going to be a huge departure after Elena was gone. And I was one of those people. I thought it was going to be a huge departure from the typical formula of our show. By virtue of the fact that it wasn't a huge leap for mankind, as far as changing it up, there were some differences that sort of mixed up the formula," he said.
"What we've just started shooting is such a departure from what is expected of the show. I just started shooting episode 10, which is a concept episode. The episode was really about Damon, but that's not why I think it was the best at all. The way the story was put together... every artisan from set to producers to wardrobe to everyone was just so on-point," he said.
Meanwhile, fans still believe that there's still hope that Dobrev will reprise her role in an upcoming episode of "The Vampire Diaries." In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Julie Plec said that there's a possibility that Dobrev will star in the show's finale episode.
Plec also revealed that Dobrev personally told her that she wants to be there for the finale episode because she wants to see how Elena's character will develop.
"The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 airs Thursdays at on The CW.
