"Supergirl" cast member Peter Facinelli recently revealed why his character Maxwell Lord doesn't really like Supergirl.
In an interview with Comic Book Resources, the actor revealed how Maxwell perceives Melissa Benoist's character.
"He looks down on all superheroes or any sort of aliens that are interfering with the human race. He believes humanity needs to save themselves... When you rely on a superhero too much, what happens when they are not there one day?" he said.
Facinelli added that Maxwell may admire the kind of powers superheroes have, but he wants to be able to find a way to harness that power positively.
Meanwhile, fans of the new series perceive Maxwell as a villainous character. However, Facinelli said that this isn't necessarily the case. In an interview with Zap2It, the 41-year-old actor said that Maxwell is nothing like Lex Luthor.
"People ask, 'Is he the Lex Luthor of National City?' and I don't think there are similarities in that sense. Lex Luthor is an evil genius who is doing everything selfishly because he wants to have money and gain power and take over the world. But Maxwell already has money and he already has power," he explained.
Facinelli stressed that Maxwell doesn't have any desire to take over the world. Rather, he wants to be able to save it.
"There's a thin line between good and bad and Maxwell is right in the middle of it. Sometimes he has to do bad things for the greater good. He has the ideology and that is the planet is dying. We shouldn't be wasting our time thinking about superheroes when we should be saving the planet. Humanity needs to step up to the plate and come together. They need to fix their problems. Everything stems from that," he said.
"Supergirl" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
