Want to know what kind of presents will be most popular this Christmas season? The recently launched iPhone app IBM Watson Trend can help.

This new app is "based on artificially intelligent computer system that could crunch 10,000 data sources to predict what kind of products would be most popular during the holiday season," an article on Telegraph.co.uk explained. The article also further stated that the app has the capability to answer questions that are posed in natural language.

Four years ago, this app amazed audiences worldwide because it had been outperforming its human opponents consistently on Jeopardy, an American quiz show. Several adaptions of this app were made for a wide range of use including commercial applications, as well as advising doctors on lung cancer treatments, analysing business trends, and writing its own cookbook.

WIth all those uses, IBM engineers have tapped on it and developed an iPhone app that utilizes Watson to identify what's trending during the holiday season and predict the hottest products before stores are all sold out.

How does it work? The app distills the sentiment of tens of millions of online conversations daily. It scours 10,000 sources across social media sites, blogs, forums, comments, ratings and reviews. And it updates its list everyday.

The new IBM Watson Trend app is different than any other apps that provide a static ranking of "hot products". How? This app reveals "how consumers feel about the products they are considering or have purchased". The article further stated that the app also "uses predictive analytics to forecast if a particular trend is a fleeting fad or will continue to remain strong."

You can download the app for free via the Apple App Store. There is also a web version available.
