'The Originals' and 'The Vampire Diaries' showrunner Julie Plec described how  CW's 'The Vampire Diaries' and 'The Originals' are tied up as she shared behind the scenes stories and updates from the two shows in an article she wrote for Entertainment Weekly.

The spinoff that revolves around the lives of the Mikaelsons sprung from TVD which is about the Salvatore brothers, played by Paul Wesley (Stefan) and Ian Somerhalder (Damon). However, how they are connected does not stop with the common characters present in both shows.

The choice of songs in every episode plays a vital part in both of the series. The executive producer shared that the writers 'The Original' almost killed the TVD team because they had chosen the same song for their final sequence, and TVD was able to get it.

The storyline is also a great consideration for both. Plec shared that there would be storyline pitches that would not work for 'The Originals' but would become a hit for TVD. "We almost didn't create the long-lost Original sibling Freya because we had a pitch that Enzo would be a long-lost Salvatore sibling at the same time," she recalled.

She added that the pitch to have Hope the Miracle Baby was brought up when Klaus was on TVD, and if they had not moved forward to the spin-off, Hayley would have been carrying the Miracle Baby on TVD, so they would not be able to include the hit twist in the other show.

In times when both shows are fighting over a story pitch or a song, Flec says she does the difficult job of making the decision and sometimes she uses one show to help the other.

'The Originals is now on its 3rd season, and just last week, the Mikaelsons sat down for a Thanksgiving dinner just like any other families on the special holiday. Of course, it went crazy, as theirs is not a typical family, to say the least. Meanwhile, TVD is currently on their 7th season. A lot has changed since the brothers were introduced during their first year, and now that the vampire series' leading lady Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) is out of the picture, the show will mainly revolve around the Salvatores, according to Design & Trend.

Both shows are aired on CW: 'The Originals' every Thursday at 9pm, while TVD will return on December 3, 8pm.
