People may soon be bidding goodbye to Wi-Fi!

Who would ever think that the technology we've considered powerful can be replaced in just a short period of time? Scientists have recently discovered a new wireless technology which is more powerful and a hundred times faster than Wi-Fi.

According to ScienceAlert, Li-Fi was discovered by Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh in 2011. The said new wireless technology has the ability to transmit more data through a single LED flickering light.

With its visible light that runs from 400 to 800 terahertz, Li-Fi could transmit messages through a binary code and can download a maximum of 18 movies in a fast way compared to Wi-Fi. It releases 224-speed gigabits per second and transmits data using a visible light communication. Li-Fi has even been tested in some offices and industrial companies in Tallinn, Estonia.

Deepak Solanki, CEO from Estonian Technology Company, stressed that the new wireless technology can revolutionize the internet usage. It helped them do pilot projects through the VLC or visible light communication technology.

The difference between Wi-Fi and Li-Fi aside from the speed is the ability of the latter to make ewer interferences in some devices. The light that Li-Fi emits cannot pass through walls which provide more security in the operation.

During the TED talk, Haas claimed that every LED light bulb could be used by companies as an ultra-fast alternative to Wi-Fi.  Li-Fi experts claimed that Haas and his team have already launched a company, called PureLiFi, which can offer a plug-and-play application to secure every wireless internet access. If this application will succeed, users can eventually gain access to the Internet via LED light bulbs in their homes.

Despite the big advantage of the newly discovered wireless technology, many see the potential of using both Wi-Fi and Li-Fi technologies to create a more secure and efficient networks which will benefit large industries.
