Being the daughter of Anakin Skywalker, who turned out to be (SPOILERS!) Darth Vader, and being the twin sister of Luke Skywalker, becoming a Jedi is in the blood of Princess Leia. It would probably be cool if she does end up as a Jedi, minus the cutting of one arm, of course.

But according to an interview by Terri Schwartz with J.J. Abrams, the director of the new Star Wars film, as reported over at IGN, Princess Leia chose to be a General in the Resistance forces, saying that it was “simply a choice that she made.” This was the idea that was given by him and Carrie Fisher, the actress who plays Princess Leia. Abrams also mentioned that he and George Lucas, the creator and director of the first Star Wars Trilogy, had talks about when would be the proper age to begin training to be a Jedi. According to Abrams, there is no ‘ticking clock’ as to when a person can start the training.

It seems that the film is pushing for a sort of a ‘girl power’ movement, but the actors don’t think that this is intentional. After a recent press conference that happened with the cast of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” or “Star Wars Episode VII", the actors didn’t give much details about the story and what their character’s role will be in the new trilogy. Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey said, “I hope Rey will be something of a girl power figure.” Gwendolyn Christie, who plays a stormtrooper named Captain Plasma says, “This seems different from other women that I see in films. I’m feeling very very inspired by that. Inspired by a woman with such tenacity, and so strong minded.” The character of Captain Plasma was originally written as a male character.

The press conference also gave little details as to what we can expect in the upcoming film. One of it was that JarJar Binks will not be in the new trilogy as confirmed by Abrams.

As to the character origin of Rey and Finn, their surnames are not yet revealed so we still don’t know if Rey is a descendant of Luke Skywalker, or if Finn is a descendant of Captain Lando Calrissian, as what rumors suggest. We just have to find out for ourselves when the movie hits the cinemas on Dec. 18.
