"The Vampire Diaries" actor Ian Somerhalder is in heat as he's the main topic in various headlines. News broke out that "The Vampire Diaries" final season is fast approaching. The series is said to end after the 7th season as it is struggling to keep up with its ratings after Nina Dobrev's departure.

During an interview with Variety, Somerhalder was asked on how the new TVD season is going, to which he answered:

"I personally think everyone thought it was going to be a huge departure after Elena (Nina Dobrev) was gone. And I was one of those people. I thought it was going to be a huge departure for the typical formula of our show. By virtue of the fact that it wasn't a huge leap for mankind, as far as changing it up, there were some differences that sort of mixed up the formula."

Somerhalder then added that for "The Vampire Diaries" story may have revolved around his character Damon for the latest season, he still thinks that the story is well put up.

"What we've just started shooting is such a departure (from what is expected of the show). I just started shooting episode 10, which is a concept episode. The episode was really about Damon, but that's not why I think it was the best at all. The way the story was put together ... every artisan from set to producers to wardrobe to everyone was just so on-point."

Somerhalder also shared that he prefers working with female directors as they have more depth that men, to which it is easier for them to have an emotional connection.

"I love female directors. I hate to say it, but women are so much deeper than men. They come at things from a much more layered, emotional perspective. They're much more in tune with the human psyche."

Somerhalder also talked about the "Ian Somerhalder Foundation" which focuses on saving the earth by going green. It a a foundation focused on building animal shelters and green technology. Despite his busy schedule, Somerhalder takes time in running the foundation along with his wife, Nikki Reed.
