Nintendo 3DS is here to stay according to Nintendo's Sales and Marketing head, Scott Moffitt.

In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Moffitt said the hand held device will not cease to exist even after the company has joined the smartphone gaming market. The tech giant has agreed that joining the bandwagon is inevitable considering its demand popularity, but 3DS' support will continue especially since the product has been doing exceedingly well in terms of sales.

3DS has sold more units than its tech rivals Xbox One and PlayStation4. According to the Nintendo Sales boss, they have sold more than 54 million units as of September 30. This is a lot more compared to Sony's latest console PS4 which has reached over 30 million units in terms of sales. Microsoft on the other hand has allegedly sold a mere 17.1 million units since its release.

Moffitt emphasizes that the two gaming platforms do not counter each other, but actually presents more options for gamers. He says, "It's a mistake to consider this a zero-sum game. Clearly gaming on smart devices and gaming on Nintendo 3DS can happily coexist, to the benefit of all gamers. The fact is, playing games on two very different hardware platforms means options for two very different kinds of game play. The inclusion of multiple control buttons on Nintendo 3DS allows a much deeper and more sophisticated type of play."

Miitomo, a free-to-play game with the option to buy add on accessories, will be Nintendo's launching smartphone game, set to be released on March 2016. With the help of mobile game producer DeNA, the goal is to release about 5 games by the year 2017. This is something new for the tech company since they have been known for producing games just for its own devices as a form of preserving their financial model.
