Will Smith's fate in the upcoming sequel, "Independence Day: Resurgence" has been revealed months away from the premiere of the latest installment in the franchise. Considered as one of the top stars in the original 1996 film, Smith's absence in the upcoming movie was explained via a new and viral marketing website created for the sequel.

The marketing site created for the upcoming sequel revealed that Smith's character, Steven Hiller, died while testing a new alien technology, the ESD, which is considered as the first alien hybrid fighter, for the global defense network. The events took place after the aliens tried to conquer Earth, according to The Wrap. Director Roland Emmerich revealed that Smith eventually got tired of doing sequels and opted out of the "Independence Day: Resurgence" movie.

It took two decades before a sequel for the much-celebrated "Independence Day" film was created. Director Emmerich confirmed a second and a third sequel to the film just a few months ago, according to Screen Rant. With plans of a releasing the second and third sequel a few months after the other, it was initially planned that both sequels will film at the same time. With just a few months before its premiere, an official trailer has been finally released for "The Independence Day: Resurgence."

Although the trailer mostly features the returning cast members of "Independence Day," several aspects of the film have been observed. The aliens are still interested in conquering Earth for its resources, but humans have managed to use alien weaponry as defense against the invaders. However, this technology might not be enough to defend the Earth against a "bigger" attack from the aliens.

Will Smith's son in the movie, Dylan, will return in the sequel of the sci-fi film and will be portrayed by Jessie Usher. Several new cast members will also be introduced in the film, including Liam Hemsworth and Maika Monroe.

"Independence Day: Resurgence" is slated to be released on cinemas on June 24, 2016.
