Christmas is a holiday enjoyed by the many. It was considered as the glad tidings of good cheer in biblical times. Little did we know that some traditions we still hold today have some shocking origins to it. Here are 5 that we discovered:
Christmas stockings are a symbol of rescued from prostitution. There was a man in the 4th century who could not afford dowry for his three daughters. He bemoans this fact and so no one wants to marry his daughters. It meant back in their days that these ladies would have to get a job only fit for unwed women, and that is to be a prostitute.
A certain Greek priest named St. Nicolas, heard of this family's story. In order to rescue the girls, He went to their house one night to offer some gold and save them from their job-to-be. When he came the door was locked but he saw stocking drying in front of the hearth. There he placed the gold inside of those stockings which saved the girls from their sad flight.
Caroling was just an extortion racket for the holidays. Before the 19th century, people would go out from house to house during Christmas time to play instruments with the expectation of being invited into the house of another to eat, drink and be merry. People would also go cross dressing, or wear an animal costume and fuck in front of someone's house, because they say it's not Christmas unless you're not having such fun.
Good King Wenceslas dies a Game of Thrones Kind of death. Just when he thinks everybody is a noble as him. He was invited to dine by his younger brother Boleslaw where he ended up stabbed and being dismembered in front of a church. This all happened because when his father died, his mother Drahomira took over the reign. She was a pagan, and King Wenceslas' grandmother was a Ludmilla was Christian. Ludmilla prodded her grandson to rule take over Bohemia to rule in the name of Christ. Drahomira didn't like the idea of Christian getting many in numbers resulting to Wenceslas death.
Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer is created by a department store. During the 1930, a department store named Montgomery Ward used to give out books for free to children. Later though, they decided to lessen their costs so instead of buying from publishers, Robert L. May was tasked to make their own book instead and come up with their own story.
Rudolf may be a reindeer but his story was derived from the real life story of May who when as a child was bullied. Shortly after, his wife dies of cancer. He though did not make any money from creating Rudolf, which meant he could not be able to pay his wife's hospital bills, so the CEO of the department store gave him his rights to Rudolf.
Modern Santa Clause Was Just Created by Rich New Yorkers. There was a group of Dutch-Americans who created formed a "St. Nicolas Society." They simply want the people to stop from drinking and horsing around on the streets during the holidays. Thanks to them, Santa Claus was created, people became well behaved and it gave the chance for children to have another birthday party in a year.
So much for Christmas, Happy Holidays!
