Before the finale episode of "The Affair" Season 2, Showtime already confirmed the show's renewal for Season 3, and the show creator teased some details about their plans for the new season.

Variety exclusively reported earlier this month that along with "Homeland," "The Affair" has been confirmed for Season 3. It did not come as a surprise for fans since the two drama shows were ranked as the top two highest-rated premium cable series for the latter part of this year.

"The Affair" Season 2 had so many secrets, twists and challenges that fans are wondering what will happen in the next season. International Business Times reports that show creator Sarah Treem revealed in an interview that the "tone" of the show will change in the next season; however, she did not specify what this means. Earlier this year, Treem said that they already have an idea for a story plot for Season 3.

In an interview with Elle, Treem explained that they always want to show the viewers the different stages in a love affair in every season. She elaborated that the first season was just like having a crush and the second season was supposed to be darker.

Treem added that Season 2 was like" when the blush is off the rose" and when two people begin to doubt each other, they also start to become obsessed with each other. The fans therefore can expect big changes again when the show returns for the third season.

Actor Joshua Jackson has teased in an interview that Season 3 might be all about resolution on the events that happened in Season 2. He explained that in Season 2, the central focus was about suffering, and he thinks that it is the time where people should come to a sense of resolution.

As of writing, there is still no official schedule for Season 3 but it is expected to premiere sometime in 2016.
