New York real estate heir Robert Durst will come back to Los Angeles in the coming year. He set to face charges of first degree murder, for the shooting death of his friend Susan Berman, as announced by Los Angeles prosecutors on Tuesday.
Reports claim that Durst would be extradited to Los Angeles from Louisiana by August 18, 2016, as stipulated in his filing agreement with the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.
One of Durst's attorneys, Richard DeGuerin, said on Tuesday that the extradition agreement is "part of our effort to have Robert Durst face and defeat the California murder charge as soon as possible."
"Bob Durst didn't kill Susan Berman and doesn't know who did," said DeGuerin. He continued, "He is eager to go to trial and prove his innocence."
Durst was arrested in New Orleans with "a latex mask, a fake ID and nearly $43,000," in addition to the marijuana and loaded gun, which was found in his hotel room. The 72-year-old estranged member of the family behind 1 World Trade Center in New York is currently jailed in New Orleans. ABC News reports:
"Court filings have shown that Durst has struck a plea deal with federal prosecutors on a weapons charge in New Orleans. The weapons charge has kept Durst jailed in Louisiana since March, even though he waived extradition on the murder charge in Los Angeles."
Allegations claim that Durst killed Berman to prevent her from cooperating with an investigation. The investigation was on the disappearance of Robert's wife back in 1982.
Susan Berman - a Las Vegas mobster's daughter, writer and filmmaker - was shot once in the back of her head on December 23, 2000. Her body was found on Christmas eve, in her Benedict Canyon home.
Robert Durst was charged with Berman's murder last spring, a day before he purportedly confessed to "kill[ing] them all, of course," on the docuseries "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst" on HBO.
