Many celebrities have spoken up the gender pay gap in Hollywood, like Jennifer Lawrence and Sandra Bullock. Although Kate Winslet initially didn't want to involve herself in the controversy, the "Titanic" star is now speaking up.
In a recent interview with E! News, Winslet now claims that her previous comments were "misinterpreted." In an attempt to clarify the issue, "The Dressmaker" star told Marc Malkin at the Palm Springs International Film Festival:
"When you're talking about specifics of pay that is a line of questioning I really had a hard time with. So my remarks were in response to that but only that. Of course we should be paid the same as the boys. We want to stand alongside them."
Back in November, Winslet "declined to comment" on the gender pay gap issue, even calling the conversation "vulgar." In an interview with BBC, via Jezebel, Winslet explained:
"I'm quite surprised by these conversations to be honest, simply because it seems quite a strange thing to be discussing out in the open like that. I am a very lucky woman and I'm quite happy with how things are ticking along. I find all this uncomfortable. I haven't ever felt that I've really had to stick up for myself just because I'm a woman."
When she issued the statement at the time, Winslet was talking about Jennifer Lawrence's essay on Lena Dunham's Lenny newsletter back in October.
Lawrence revealed the gender wage gap in Hollywood, following a Sony email hack that shed a light on how much less she had been paid in comparison to her male co-stars in "American Hustle."
Kate Winslet also made it clear that she does support Jennifer Lawrence's essay, noting that the "Joy" star had an "entirely appropriate" response to the issue.
"It was a very difficult situation for her," said the 40-year-old "Steve Jobs" star. "Hopefully these discussions will continue to support the efforts that are being made all over the world for the right to equal pay in this field and all other industries."
"For my entire career, I've really stood for women's rights and I will always remain entirely committed to empowering women and the right to equal pay is a fundamental part of that," Kate added. "Of course women should be paid the same as men. Of course they should. Of course I should."
Kate Winslet net worth is $45 million.
