You are finally moving into the house of your dreams and you can hardly contain your excitement. But before you do, here are some important things you need to take care of before your transfer.
Stop by the post office and change your address.
You need to visit your local post office or the United States Postal Service's website in order to change your address. We suggest you try and do this as early as possible to make the transition run smoothly.
Update your contact information.
You need to inform your creditors, financial institutions, schools, publications and anyone you deem important to be informed regarding your change of address. The post office can forward your mail, yes, but going right to the source will ensure that your new address would be on their file.
Inform your mailman and don't forget to say "Thank you."
That little consideration will go a long way when it comes to forwarding mail.
Change the locks in your new home.
Many people move into a new place and don't change the locks. HouseLogic states: "You really don't know who else has keys to your home." Changing the locks would "ensure you're the only person who has access. Install new deadbolts yourself for as little as $10 per lock, or call a locksmith -- if you supply the new locks, they typically charge about $20-$30 per lock for labor."
Clean the new house from top to bottom.
The previous owners of the house probably cleaned it or had it cleaned before moving out, but you don't really know if it's up to your standards. You should get a crew in there to clean the place before your big move and make sure they also clean up the closets, cabinets, and drawers.
If you plan to use the same carpets, have them cleaned thorougly as well.
Huffington Post refers carpets as "germ hotspots." And they are "botanical and zoological parks...that can be 4,000 times dirtier than your toilet seat," said microbiologist Dr. Philip Tierno, according to Men's Health. So have the carpets cleaned thoroughly.
Call an exterminator
If you don't want to see critters scurrying about your new house by the time of your big move, you need to call an exterminator and have the place checked.
Research utilities
Don't forget to ask about any new user discounts for cable or satellite, and, also for bundling packages that might be available in your area.
Before you move out of your house, shut off the utilities first.
We all know this and yet some still forget to do this when they are too eager to leave and move into their new home. If you don't want to pay double utilities, you need to turn out lights, etc. before moving out.
Inform your service providers.
Inform your gardener or housekeeper that you are moving early on if you won't be needing their services anymore.
Check and bring only the stuff that need and will use. Discard the ones you don't.
Moving out of a house and moving into a new one can be a hectic time and you may not have ample time to have a garage sale. The last thing you'd want to do is carting off boxes filled with old stuff you don't need and move those boxes into your new home, why don't you drive down to the local donation spot and take advantage of charities that would come over to your house and do a pick up. All you have to do is put those stuff on your front porch and they can bring in your tax receipt once they're done.
