They say our home says something about us, which is why we do our best to make it appear the way we intend it to be, something that suits our interest and personality.
If we are contemplating to buy a new house, we should be keen in how they look, and since "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," all the more we should be conscious about how our home would appear to be from others' point of view.
Here are three types of home we might regret having:
A home that is too close to your neighbor
Unless your window is on the opposite side of your neighbor's wall, or there's no window at all or there's a dead wall separating your house and that of your neighbor, you will have your privacy at some point. But, the thing is, having a home that is very close to your neighbor could mean a revelation of what your entire household is doing. Imagine if you have a glass window or there's a glass portion in the wall of your room, wouldn't that be too revealing of you? So, as Realtor suggests, before buying a house, consider how it is built and make sure it doesn't allow others to have a great view of you and your housemates. Privacy is important in every household after all.
A home that's too small situated beside your neighbor's pseudo-mansion
It's never wrong to be simple as that spells out humility. But, having a very small house next to a McMansion looks pathetic. You don't want your house to be thought to be the petite garage of your neighbor. It's okay to renovate the house and make it bigger but that means another expenses. Don't renovate just because you are pressured with your surroundings unless you have an instant budget to make it happen.
Life Hacker suggests that you choose a decent-sized house because you wouldn't really know how much space you will need in the future. True, before buying a tiny house, think about your future family and not just yourself. Sure thing, you don't want your children to make your little kitchen as their playground.
A home that closely resembles your neighbor's
You don't want to be told "a copy cat." Even if the house is just painted with a color that resembles that of your neighbor's just because you are in the same block and village, you need to also be conscious about it. Your house might be very hard to locate by the post man or any courier just because it looks the same with the other houses, and more so, if it doesn't have the house number.
Yet, since this scenario is common in most subdivisions, having the same paint color or structure can't be that bad anyway. Well, there's still something you can do about it. Courtney Heaton, an interior designer and owner of Courtney Heaton Design of San Francisco shares that uniform architecture raises property values. You see, there's nothing to really worry about after all.
"Add shutters, landscaping, or paint the front door a distinct color to make homes stand out from your identical neighbors," Heaton says.
Bottom line is, we all have our own tastes in life. Choosing the type of home we want to rest our shoulders on definitely depends on our discretion. It is a personal choice and the world won't judge us unjustly for that. We just need to make sure that our type of home will not reflect the opposite of what we really want the world to see us.
