Being part of the shaming is indeed not a good idea to do, much more to be the subject of it. That is why aside from the laws imposed regarding snow and clearing; it would be better to do such task in order not become a target of such malicious act.
However, you don't just only go outside after a winter storm. As mentioned above go outside when it is safe. And safety would include checking for some down power lines on your property and for downed trees and other possible injury causing objects. After you have checked for injury-causing materials or foreign objects nearby, it would also be good to check with your neighbours in case someone is injured or needing of medical attention.
