A century-old townhouse in Manhattan's Upper East Side which was reportedly eyed by music icon Madonna is listed on the market for an asking price of $84.5 million. One of the expensive New York listings, the property is owned by real estate developer Keith Rubenstein and his wife, Inga.

The property was acquired by the couple in 2007 for $35 million after beating Madonna's offer. When Mr. and Mrs. Rubenstein purchased the townhouse, it was in its deteriorating state, the Architectural Digest claims. The site added that the building which was originally made by John H. Duncan in1903 was almost destructed in various units. It was then that the pair decided that they needed an overhaul to reconstruct the place. They sought the help of architect William T. Georgis to remodel it which lasted for three years.

"This house has lasted for more than 100 years," Keith said. "And I'm happy to say that now it will last-maybe not forever but at least 100 more."

Listing agent Adam D. Modlin of Modlin Group claimed that the grand townhouse covers an area of about 15,000 square feet with six levels. The Beaux Arts limestone residence has six bedrooms and 14 bathrooms and features an enormous marble staircase and artworks. Known for their "over-the-top parties," the Rubenstein made sure that their residence is a picture of blue-chip contemporary art, 21st-century design and the best in artisanal craftsmanship.

The lavish New York digs boasts grandeur designs from top to bottom: handmade marquetry floors inspired by St. Petersburg Palace in the dining room, a billiard room in the top level with walls upholstered in red Hermès leather, a smoking room furnished with a ventilation system, a media room, and a bar, according to Wall Street Journal.

Other significant aspects of the property include a mirrored boudoir with a fireplace and deep-soaking tub, master suite with his-and-hers bathrooms and dressing rooms. Mrs. Rubenstein's dressing room has a temperature-controlled storage for furs.

The chic townhouse also has a gym, a wine cellar, and a spa area with a massage room, sauna and plunge pool on the lower level. The house also has nearly 2,500 square feet of outdoor space perfect for entertaining their European guests. The roof deck is equipped with an outdoor kitchen and a bathroom, a rock garden and seating and dining areas.
