It seems that fans of "Ghostbusters" would get not one but two new movies from the popular supernatural comedy. Rumors are circulating that the original film cast member Dan Aykroyd has plans to come out with his own sequel after the new remake.
A report from The A.V. Club said that the Hollywood actor is keen on coming out with a third "Ghostbusters" movie that would feature the same actors and continue the storyline of the past two.
Aykroyd, who also wrote the past two movies, was a guest at both "The Howard Stern Show" and "Unmasked With Ron Bennington" where he shared his desire to push through with a third movie for the franchise.
"There's three drafts of the old concept that exists, " the 62-year old actor said. "And we're going to be able to salvage some of it and use it. Yeah, we're gonna be able to use it some day," he shared.
Aside from writing the first two movies, the Canadian actor also starred as one of the members of the ghost-hunting crew alongside Bill Murray and Harold Ramis, said The Guardian.
He was rumored to have been trying his best to convince Murray to join him in the remake but the latter showed no interest in the project as the script was not funny enough.
Aykroyd also admitted in his interview with Howard Stern that he believes him and Murray "will never work together again."
With this admission and fellow actor Harold Ramis' demise, it would seem impossible to create a third film that Aykroyd envisioned.
A remake of "Ghostbusters" is set to come out in July 2016, which would feature a fresh take on the popular movie.
Paul Feig, who wrote the script for the upcoming film by Sony, chose to feature an all-female cast as a way to rework the franchise, said Screenrant.
Despite Aykroyd's desire to come out with a third film written by himself, he was full of praises for Feig's work.
"I can tell you, as the originator, I'm very happy with what Feig's done. It's very tasteful. And it needed a reworking. The thing needed a new engine. You know? It needed new exhaust. It needed new steering. And this is what we're getting," the actor said.
He also noted that it would be exactly what the franchise needed to get the fans excited again for the possibility of a third movie.
"Let's get this one made and that will reinvigorate the franchise and then we'll go on to maybe doing a more conventional third sequel as we were planning and another idea I have for it," Aykroyd said.
The upcoming third "Ghostbusters" film would star Kirsten Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon.
