It seems that the movie "Prometheus" is on its way to becoming the first in a trilogy of movies featuring characters from outside the Earth. Reports are circulating that a new "Alien" movie is coming out soon after "Prometheus 2" hits theaters.
According to Variety, 20th Century Fox has given the go-signal for a remake of the 1986 movie. Neil Blomkamp, who was behind "Elysium" and "District 9," would be taking the director's chair in the upcoming movie.
Blomkamp made the announcement on his Instagram page. The director uploaded a photo of a concept art of "Aliens" with the caption, "Um... So I think it's officially my next film. #alien"
Before the director confirmed his next project, he had been dropping hints on his Instagram page. However, a post two months ago sang a different tune when a concept art of "Aliens" was uploaded on his social media page with a note saying, "Was working on this. Don't think I am anymore. Love it though. #alien #xenomorph"
With the green light to go ahead with the remake of the movie, which starred Sigourney Weaver, speculations on the possible storyline emerged with some saying that the new movie would replace Ridley Scott's Prometheus, said iDigitalTimes.
A source close to the matter denied the rumors and said, "Fox continues to develop 'Prometheus 2' with director Ridley Scott.'"
The source also said that while no exact announcement on the possible plot has been made, the "Aliens" remake would be set after the events of "Prometheus 2."
The possibility of the new remake following the timeline of the upcoming "Prometheus 2" led some fans to believe that it would make the new movie a part of a trilogy that began in "Prometheus."
For people who viewed the first movie, the last scene, which saw the birth of a xenomorph, made it seem like the movie is a prequel to the 1986 film. However, Scott insisted that while the movie "carries the DNA" of "Alien," "Prometheus" remains to be separate from that movie.
In a move that appear to have sealed his statement, the director revealed that the sequel to his 2012 film would no longer feature xenomorphs as the ancestors of the aliens, said Film Drunk.
Scott hinted that the upcoming movie would focus more on the journey of the characters played by Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace instead of an actual outer space beast.
"Prometheus 2" would hit theaters in 2017.
