‘Ghostbusters 3' Release Date, Cast & Trailer: Original Cast Confirmed for Sequel? Actor Spills Details [Rumors]

It has already been confirmed that a "Ghostbusters" reboot will hit the big screen and unlike the original, the team is composed of an all-female cast.

The original supernatural-busting team of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, and the late Harold Ramis will be revived by Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon.

According to a new report by the Christian Post, while many are having mixed feelings about the major character changes, Aykroyd shared during an appearance at SiriusXM studios, he's thrilled about the new take on the franchise but teased the possibility of an original sequel with the initial cast.

"Well, there's three drafts of the old concept that exists. And we're going to be able to salvage some of it and use it. Yeah, we're gonna be able to use it someday. Let's get this one made and that will reinvigorate the franchise and then we'll go on to maybe doing a more conventional third sequel as we were planning and another idea I have for it," teased the actor.

While he seems to be hopeful that a third installment in his franchise will take place, he does say the new version is going to be interesting. "The real reality in fact of the third movie with this tremendous cast of women, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Kristen Wiig. ... I've got three daughters, so I'm all for female empowerment," Aykroyd commented.

"[Feig] establishes the voices beautifully in these characters. Now of course, he's got masters playing the roles for him, so this is going to really work in our favor for the third movie," said the 62-year-old.

He continued to add that he's pleased with what the director has done because the series needed new life breathed into it. "I can tell you, as the originator, I'm very happy with what [Feig's] done. It's very tasteful. And it needed a reworking. The thing needed a new engine. You know? It needed new exhaust. It needed new steering. And this is what we're getting," he went on to say.

The journey to the reboot hasn't been an easy one. While Ivan Reitman, the original director, along with other actors were poised for a return, Bill Murray refused. The Hollywood Reporter also noted that following the death of actor Ramis, Reitman backed out of the project.

No trailer for the upcoming film has been released. The "Ghostbusters" is pegged for release July 22, 2016.
