Eugene O'Neill's Home for Sale? Get an 'Eye for History' with Casa Genotta for $6.45 Million

Casa Genotta, the highly luxurious oceanfront property on Sea Island, was actually designed by the famous architect Francis Abreu using the Mizner style. According to Luxury Portfolio, Abreu built it for playwright Eugene O'Neill, who had won a Pulitzer Prize, and his beautiful wife, Carlotta, back in the 1930s.

The property is absolutely magnificent, especially with its beautifully sunlit hallway with spiraling columns to the grand living room that has cypress-beamed ceilings with glass windows. Thankfully, for those who have a "wonderful eye for history," as listing agent, Don Lewis, had put it, the Casa Genotta is now in the market.

It is located on a 1,000-acre private island off of Georgia with seven bedrooms and six bathrooms. It is right between Jacksonville, Florida to the north and Savannah, Georgia to the south. It has a library on the second floor where the late playwright, who died in 1953, is believed to have come up with his best work. This special room has such a breathtaking view of the ocean that would have served as inspiration for O'Neill.

Moreover, even the desk that he used for writing can still be found in the library. Sadly, however, it was not among the items that were included in the sale.

"Every room is like a stage set," Lewis said. It would turn out that Carlotta had a taste for the dramatic. "The entire end of the house, both inside and out, is built like an old sailing ship."

This ship theme is more defined in detail in the library. O'Neill's favorite room has porthole windows that showed fantastic views of the ocean. In addition, one of its most loved features is a "captain's walk", which leads to a certain part on the roof of the house.

Although the property comes with a tranquil beach, it also boasts of a massive swimming pool and a grand terrace that is perfect for hosting intimate family gatherings.

Moreover, apart from having an eye for history, Realtor says that the potential buyer will have to own a huge bank account as well. The price for this luxurious writer's pad is $6,450,000.

The people who live on the island are a combination of retirees and vacationers who also chose to live there because of the breathtaking view and the peaceful area, according to Georgia Encyclopedia. Those who tend to live a more upbeat lifestyle need not fret though because Sea Island says that there are also outdoor activities available on the resort island, such as tennis, boating, and fishing.
