‘Independence Day 2’ Release Date & Cast: Liam Hemsworth Takes Over Will Smith’s Spot

The “Independence Day 2” has already gotten its green light, and Screen Rant says that production will be starting in a couple of months.

Co-writer/director Roland Emmerich has reportedly stated that the sequel will be picking up where the first one left off, and will also be bringing back some of the first movie’s main characters.

Sadly, however, Movie Web has confirmed that Will Smith, the actor who played the lead role of Steven Hiller, will not be back to reprise his role. In his place would be “The Hunger Games” star, Liam Hemsworth. He has already stated on his official Facebook page that Jeff Goldblum, the other lead character in “Independence Day,” will be back as David Levinson, and that he will be joined by “Level Up” and “Survivor’s Remorse” actor, Jessie Usher.

Emmerich wrote on social media that producer Harald Kloser was the one who discovered Usher. According to his post, Kloser “noticed Jessie in between sets of push-ups at the gym and gave him an audition. Apparently, Usher has impressive acting skills as he was signed for the role.

Those who have seen the 1996 blockbuster may remember that Smith had a young non-biological son named Dylan, who was played by Ross Bagley, and a dog. Although it remains unknown if the dog will be making an appearance, The Hollywood Reporter has stated that Usher’s role will be the now-adult son of Captain Hiller.

Consequence of Sound has stated that Bill Pullman, who played the role of President Thomas J. Whitmore, wants to return to the franchise, but, to date, there has been no confirmation on whether or not he will be officially part of the cast.

According to Screenrant, continuing the events that transpired in “Independence Day,” “Independence Day 2” will be featuring a present-day Earth, one that has somehow found ways to make use of the technology that was left by the the previous alien invaders. However, the plot thickens when Earth is, once again, caught off-guard in yet another alien attack.

A new fleet of alien ships will reportedly get a second chance at taking over the planet. Apparently, this fleet was part of the previous one, only that they have been passing through a wormhole for the past twenty years.

Moreover, even it has already been reported by multiple sources that Hemsworth’s role is a main one, no further details have been provided. Emmerich will be directing from a script that was written by Carter Blanchard. Additionally, he will be producing alongside Kloser and Dean Devlin.

Also dubbed “ID Forever,” "Independence Day 2" will be back in theaters on June 24, 2016.
