Besides cleaning, organizing, and cooking at home, one of the best things home buddies enjoy is looking out the window and savoring the view day and night. But how can you do this if your window sill is filled with unnecessary items?
Windows plays a vital role in every house. It allows to let as much natural light and air into the room, making it an ultimate piece to define a space's vibe. Transparent and open windows allow fresh air to flow inside the house, but sometimes, we are all guilty of decorating this area to make it pleasing to the eye.
A window will, or the bottom piece of the window trim, is the ledge found at the bottom of the window. The window sill is an essential part of the window as it keeps out the rain, making it more energy-efficient. Most of the time, this small space serves as a room's built-in shelf where homeowners put all sorts of trinkets like plants, picture frames, flower vases, candles, and more.
While the window ledge is a convenient and clever way to beautify your home, experts warn that some items are never meant to be placed here, as it can be a potentially dangerous place for certain things. Below is some stuff that you should avoid putting on the window sills.
Food
Since the window ledge has direct access to sunlight and outdoors, this space is also prone to temperature fluctuation. This is the very reason why food and other edible items should stay off the window sill. Direct sunlight and temperature change can spoil food, so even a candy jar should not be found in this area.
"Food is the quickest way to attract all unwanted bugs and animals not only to your window but into your house as well," realtor Tina Wilcher of Century 21 Exclusive Properties told Apartment Therapy.
Cleaning Supplies
Cleaning supplies with chemicals could pose a danger to your health and safety. Wilcher explained that changes in weather and temperature could combust cans or make chemicals less effective.
Candles
Yup. Surprisingly, the window ledge is off-limits for your favorite candles. Whether you put it there only for decor purposes, it will surely melt under direct sunlight. You would not want to waste and clean melted wax on your gorgeous window sill, right?
Fragile Items
Home stager Katherine Gonzales of Antlers and Arm Chairs said that homeowners should avoid putting fragile or breakable items on the window seal or even near an open window.
"One small gust of wind and the items will be knocked off and shattered," Gonzales explained.
Another dangerous item to place at the window ledge is a mirror, reflecting the ray of sunlight that could potentially cause a fire.
Gadget and Books
During rainy days, window sills are not the safest place to put your electronic items as water leaks can damage them. Prolonged exposure to sun or heat may also damage your expensive gadgets to the window ledge is not really for them to hangout.
While books are a perfect decor to the window sill, again, the direct sunlight could cause discoloration or destroy the material of your favorite reading material.
