Over the past years, tiny, prefabricated homes have become a popular alternative to the traditional family home. These houses, which can be customized and expanded to suit a family's needs, sell for between $30,000 to $70,000 on average.
The tiny little homes have attracted many buyers, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the world's richest man with a net worth of $242.1 billion, per Forbes.
Musk owns a prototype tiny home unit from Boxabl, a Las Vegas startup. The unit, called the Casita, is a 375-square-foot home that sells for $49,500. Musk's tiny home is installed in Boca Chica, Texas, near SpaceX's launch site.
Inside Musk's Tiny Home
While it is unclear how Musk's two-bedroom Casita is arranged, Walter Isaacson, a biographer who shadowed the Tesla CEO for nearly three years, shared a photo of the billionaire's $50,000 home on Twitter in August of this year. The image appeared to show Musk's kitchen and a portion of his living room.
In the photo, Musk appears to have a katana sword resting on his coffee table beside a rocket-shaped decoration. The billionaire also had a poster for "Amazing Stories," a science fiction pulp magazine, hanging on the wall over his kitchen table.
In 2020, Musk announced he was selling all his real estate properties and begin renting a $50,000 house in Texas. He initially denied owning the Casita but admitted that he owns a Boxabl on a podcast in July 2022. However, he claimed he was only using the Boxabl as a guest house.
Boxabl's tiny home features long-lasting, high-quality walls built to withstand harsh weather conditions. The house also has floor-to-ceiling glass doors that double as windows. The open, customizable floor plan comes with plenty of smart storage solutions, per Home and Texture.
All Casitas feature a kitchen fully equipped with a fridge, dual sinks, a dishwasher, an oven, and a dining table that connects to the countertops. The bathroom, located next to the kitchen, comes with a shower and a bathtub, according to Business Insider.
Boxabl entered the market in 2017 and has since built 200 tiny homes so far. The company also received a $10 million government contract for military housing.
