Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres will return to Anfield not to play again for Liverpool, but to entertain soccer fans in a charity match that will be organized by the club.
"A unique charity football match to benefit the people of Liverpool will take place at Anfield later this month, which will include two All-Star line-ups of some of Europe's elite players," Liverpool said in a statement on Thursday.
According to the club, the special exhibition match will be organized by the Liverpool FC Foundation. The match scheduled on March 29 at Anfield will feature two All-Star teams.
Liverpool legends Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher will captain each team and will select top players in Europe that they have played against. Gerrard and Carragher are expected to announce that All-Star team in the coming weeks as they are currently recruiting players for the match.
Suarez and Torres have reportedly confirmed their participation, which will mark their return to Anfield, where they enjoyed success earlier in their respective careers.
Torres, who is currently playing for Atletico Madrid in Spanish La Liga, made 102 appearances and scored 82 goals for Liverpool from 2007-2011 before moving to Chelsea.
Suarez also enjoyed the best years of his career at Anfield. He made 110 appearances for Liverpool and scored 69 goals for the club before making a lucrative move last summer. The Uruguay international moved to FC Barcelona in the offseason for a fee of 80 million Euros.
Aside from Suarez and Torres, several players have already confirmed their participation, including Pepe Reina, Dirk Kuyt, Xabi Alonso, Thierry Henry, John Terry and Didier Drogba. Current Liverpool players could also participate in the unique charity event, the club announced.
"Current Reds first-team players who are not on international duty will also play some part, as well as some of the Academy's brightest stars, plus the club's backroom staff will also be on hand to offer support," Liverpool FC added.
According to the club, proceeds of the match will go to the Liverpool FC Foundation, which will then use the earnings for their community programs for thousands of people in Liverpool.
Aside from the charity side of the event, the star-studded match will also serve as a farewell event for Gerrard, who will move to LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer after the current season.
"Gerrard will leave Liverpool at the end of the season and this special match will give fans the opportunity to see him alongside some of their favorites - all to raise funds for the local community," Liverpool added.
