According to reports, at least 90 people have been killed across the southeastern U.S., and millions are without power due to the storm, which made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane on Thursday. The White House has approved disaster declarations in North Carolina, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia and Alabama, freeing up federal emergency management money and resources for those states.

Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 hurricane, destroyed hundreds of homes across northern Florida to Virginia last week. In the aftermath, one nonprofit organization is stepping in with hopes of providing temporary shelter to households displaced by the storm.

Airbnb.org, a nonprofit organization that aims to help displaced Americans during crises and emergencies, has announced an initiative to provide free temporary homes for Helene victims.

In its press release published Sept. 30, the nonprofit said it is currently working with the Florida United Methodist Conference and more than 200 contact centers in both Florida and North Carolina to determine the people "in greatest need" of a place to stay.

"Stays are completely free for guests and are funded by Airbnb.org and the generosity of Airbnb hosts - many of whom offer their home for free or at a discount through Airbnb.org," the release read.

Who Are Eligible for Airbnb's Free Temporary Housing?

The initiative will focus specifically on households whose homes are now uninhabitable or were forced to evacuate due to the hurricane.

To check your eligibility, contact FLUMC at either (863) 688-5563 or (800) 282-8011 if you live in Florida. For those in North Carolina, they can contact their local 211 center. Additionally, residents of both states who were affected by Hurricane Helene can also go to their website at 211.org.

Since the storm passed, Airbnb.org has placed "a few hundred people" in temporary housing, according to CBS News, citing the nonprofit's executive director Christoph Gorder.

How Can You Be a Host?

Homeowners who are interested in hosting displaced residents can sign up through Airbnb.org. They will receive damage protection and liability insurance for each booking. The nonprofit will also confirm the identity and eligibility of the guest beforehand. More information about the processes can be found here.

Current Airbnb hosts can also offer discounts or waive fees to Hurricane Helene. It is important to note that homes priced regularly may also be rented out to families in need. Airbnb.org will cover the cost of the rental.

Lastly, homeowners who cannot host but are willing to help cover the costs of housing hurricane victims can also donate on Airbnb.org.
