The hunting lodge where convicted killer Alex Murdaugh murdered his family is now undergoing extensive renovations by new owners who purchased the property in an auction.

South Carolina businessman Alexander Wallace Blair bought the 21-acre property in Islandton for $1 million at an auction. The property had an original price of $1.95 million.

It is important to note that the Murdaughs' property originally had 1,700 acres. However, it was bought for nearly $4 million in March 2023 by two local businessmen interested in using the land for hunting and farming. They put the house and the surrounding 21 acres back on the market, according to Realtor.com.

What Renovations Are Expected

After he was issued the deed to the home in May 2024, Blair transformed the interior of the 5,275-square-foot main residence, whitewashing the property's original wood paneling and adding tiles in the kitchen and a new fireplace in the living area. Brick walls had also been installed.

Blair is expected to add a large extension to the side of the home, the real estate outlet said.

It is unclear if Blair plans to use or flip the home, though initial reporting said he hoped to transform the 21-acre property into a horse farm.

The Home's Dark History

Murdaugh, who was formerly an attorney, shot and killed his 52-year-old wife, Maggie, and 22-year-old son, Paul, near the dog kennels on the property on June 7, 2021. He later called 911 to report that he had found the dead bodies of his son and wife.

"I need the police and an ambulance immediately. My wife and son were just shot badly," the disgraced attorney told emergency dispatch.

Speaking to first responders, Murdaugh claimed his son had been receiving threats and was getting punched after driving a boat the night of the fatal 2019 boat crash that killed a South Carolina teen Mallory Beach.

However, prosecutors later claimed Alex had killed Paul and Maggie after facing intense pressure for his decades of alleged financial crimes. This was done to obtain sympathy from the public and spur an end to investigations into accusations that he was stealing money.

Murdaugh was found guilty of two counts of murder and was sentenced to two consecutive life terms. He was also found guilty of 22 state financial charges and a federal fraud charge.
