Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect in the fatal shooting of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was found to be the heir to a real estate fortune and grew up in a stunning $800,000 home, courtesy of his grandfather.
On Dec. 4, 50-year-old Thompson was brutally gunned down outside a New York City hotel. Police arrested Mangione five days later in a McDonald's restaurant and found him to be in possession of a 3D-printed handgun, a silencer, multiple fake IDs, and a manifesto with quotes mirroring those from Ted Kaczynski, the infamous "Unabomber."
Mangione's arrest marks a shocking twist in the case, largely due to the suspect's very privileged childhood.
Mangione's Real Estate Background
The 26-year-old alleged shooter hails from a prominent real estate family in Maryland. His late grandfather, Nicholas, was a multimillionaire developer and owner of the Turf Valley Resort and Conference Center in Ellicott City. He bought the property in 1978 and turned it into the county's only full-service resort and conference center, featuring 220 rooms, a ballroom, a spa, and an amphitheater, per The Washington Post.

In addition, Nicholas had also bought and restored Hayfield Country Club in 1986 and founded the nursing home Lorien Health Services. The latter, specifically, has nine locations---all of which are still under the Mangione family, according to The Real Deal.
Furthermore, the family owns the WCBM-AM radio station.
Mangione's $800,000 Childhood Home
In addition to the Mangione family's expansive real estate portfolio, Luigi also grew up in luxury. He lived in a four-bedroom, five-bathroom home that his father, Louis, purchased in 2009. That same home was listed for sale in May of this year for $819,000 and sold in June for $865,000, Realtor.com reported.
The home had a spacious dining room, a remodeled kitchen, and a deck featuring a screened porch.
It is unclear when Luigi will go to trial. However, he has since been charged with one count of second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document, and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a firearm, according to CNN, citing court documents.
