Fans of the popular video game, "Grand Theft Auto," might soon find their favorite crooks and criminals outside their consoles and into the television. Word is out that an international broadcasting firm has gotten rights to come up with a drama series based on the famous game.
According to the Business Insider, public broadcasting firm BBC would feature a show about the hit video game. It would talk about "the making of" the game and not an adaptation of the franchise's story as initially assumed.
BBC would feature "Grand Theft Auto" among other shows as part of its "Make It Digital" initiative.
In a post on the broadcaster's website, the program is "a major UK-initiative to inspire a new generation to get creative with coding, programming and digital technology."
It is part of the country's strategy to encourage more digital professionals as it faces a shortage in this sector.
BBC Director General Tony Hall said, "BBC Make It Digital could help digital creativity become as familiar and fundamental as writing, and I'm truly excited by what Britain, and future great Britons, can achieve."
However, not much is known about the upcoming TV feature of "Grand Theft Auto."
In a report on Game Spot, the show was described only as a "drama based on Grand Theft Auto." It would seem that the people behind the TV show would come up with a "making of" program to focus on the guys behind the franchise.
According to IGN, the "new drama based on 'Grand Theft Auto' will come as part of a concerted effort to get the UK more interested in coding and technology."
Former Game Spot editor Guy Cocker would be part of the 90-minute program to give insight on the video game created by the Houser Brothers.
Both Dan and Sam earned a Fellowship Award in the 2014 BAFTA Games Awards in London for their work in "GTA."
While the featurette would talk about the Houser duo, Rockstar Games would not be involved in the making of it with BBC.
Some people familiar with the video game were surprised to learn that BBC would feature a TV show about it as "Grand Theft Auto" is known for its violence, criminal activity, and even drug use.
Rockstar Games recently released the "GTA Online Heists," an update on the fifth "GTA" installment the company released in 2013. The company has yet to announce the arrival of "GTA 6" for its followers.
