The "Harry Potter" films based on J.K. Rowling's seven book series might be over but it seems that this is not the last time fans would encounter the creatures from its magical world. Rumors are out that a spinoff film based on Rowling's "Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them" would hit theaters soon with a "Doctor Who" actor in tow.
The movie, which would center on the life and travels of wizard and zoologist, Newt Scamander, is set to start production soon, said Cinema Blend. While no details are known about the film and its cast, a loud buzz over who would play the lead role has been going around.
It seems that among those who auditioned for the film, Matt Smith is the favorite to play the role of Scamander. The actor reportedly expressed his desire to play the wizard and zoologist and "has been tipped for the role, with filming due to start this summer in London."
Smith is known for his portrayal of the "Eleventh Doctor" in the popular BBC series, "Doctor Who."
Should Smith take on the lead role for this film, then it would truly be an amazing marriage of two things very significant in British popular culture in one movie.
In fact, even the fans seem to think that he is a perfect fit for the role and they were not shy in letting the producers know about it. A petition online has already been created in Change.org to have Smith portray Newt Scamander, said IGN.
In spite of the fans support and eagerness, neither Smith nor any of the film's producers has confirmed his participation in the movie and it remains to be seen if the former doctor would see himself a wizard and adventurer this time.
As the movie is set around 80 years before Harry Potter and his friends arrived in Hogwarts, it would seem improbable that Harry, Hermione, and Ron will return to reprise their roles.
According to an article in News Everyday dated February 2015, Rowling was quick to point out that the upcoming movie is not a sequel or prequel to the Harry Potter films.
The author said, "Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world."
David Yates would return to direct the movie, which is slated for a theater release on Nov. 18, 2016.
