Zayn Malik has officially spoken up about his decision to leave One Direction. According to him, he is finally “doing what is right.”
It was just a few days ago when the British singer broke a lot of hearts and made a lot of teenage girls cry when he decided to leave the internationally famous boy band. This has been rumored a few days prior to the day when he officially made the announcement, but nothing was confirmed back then.
Now, Malik himself, has broken his silence and has decided to address all rumors.
Apparently, it would appear that the only thing that was keeping him from leaving 1D was the fandom. If it were not for the love, devotion, and support that his fans gave him, he would have jumped ship a long time ago.
“I feel like I have let the fans down,” he revealed to The Sun. “But, I can’t do this anymore. It is not that I have turned my back on them or anything. It is just that I just can’t do that anymore because it is not the real me.”
“I did try to do something that I was not happy doing for a while, for the sake of other people’s happiness,” he added. “It is crazy and wild and a bit mad. But, at the same time, I have never felt more in control in my life. And, I feel like I am doing what is right – right by myself, and right by the boys. So, I feel good.”
When rumors of Malik contemplating the option of leaving One Direction broke out several days ago, fans were quick to assume that their young idols must have been having some internal conflict within the group. However, Malik has refuted all of those reports, and said that they “could not be more wrong,” according to USA Today.
“My band has been really supportive,” he said. “They have been cool about it. And they understand that, you know, it is not real to me anymore.”
He also mentioned a few things about his plans of making his own music. This statement caused fans to speculate that he might have decided to leave the band in order to pursue a solo career in music.
A couple of days ago, Malik was spotted at a recoridng studio in West London. This sparked talked that he is indeed planning to go solo on his career. The Independent wrote that the former 1d member is working with Naughty Boy, a producer who has also previously worked with other famous artists such as Sam Smith.
Though his plans of becoming a solo artist might be true, Malik also previously revealed in a released statement that the reason why he left the band was because he wants to be a “normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight,” as mentioned in Independent.
