The “Star Trek” franchise might venture back into the television industry, especially since its movies have gone through shake ups over the years. After “Star Trek: Into Darkness” was released in theaters, the franchise went through different directors, namely, JJ Abrams, Roberto Orci, and Justin Lin.
Screen Rant reported that despite its film production issues, the franchise might return to television pretty soon, and that the show is actually already in the works. According to Latino Review, CBS is working hard to bring back Bryan Singer as executive producer once the show is finally back to its television roots.
The report also mentioned that CBS wants to bring back all the members of the group featured on “Star Trek: Federation.” This project would have gotten the green light, if it were not for Abrams’s big screen “Star Trek” rendition in 2006.
The “Federation” project would have been directed by Christopher McQuarrie from “Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation” with a script penned by Geoffrey Thorne from “Leverage.” The series would have had a setting placed further into the future - way past “Deep Space Nine” and “Voyager.” This would have allowed the series to begin a new storyline within the newly established universe.
However, the reports were proven false as the producer, Robert Meyer Burnett, officially shut down rumors regarding a “Star Trek” television show.
“All of the ‘Federation’ information is true,” Burnett told io9. “But, we did that 10 years ago. The treatment was written but effectively killed when JJ took over. It never went further than the treatment, and no one ever pitched it. I don’t know if Geoffrey wrote a full script.”
“While I have been working on ‘Axanar,’ we are building sets, etc., I know nothing about a new CBS ‘Trek’ series,” he revealed. Although he point-blank refuted all claims regarding an upcoming television show based on the “Star Trek” franchise, he was pretty secretive with whether he was cooking up something with Skydance Productions.
“No comment,” he said. “But, if I were, it is not related to ‘Trek’ in any way.”
Nonetheless, Burnett’s statements do not immediately mean that CBS have no plans to bring “Star Trek” back to the small screens. These could also mean that show runners are looking forward to coming up with an entirely new “Star Trek” series.
At present, “Star Trek 3” is already in production with Paramount, and the movie is reportedly slated for a 2016 premiere. That said, it may take some time before the franchise makes a comeback to television.
