‘Spy’ Trailer, Plot, Cast & Trailer: Melissa McCarthy Joins Jason Statham, Bobby Cannavale & 50 Cent in Action Comedy

“Spy” is the first film that director Paul Feig scripted, and is also the latest collaboration that he has with comedienne Melissa McCarthy. They will soon be working with each other again for a female-centered “Ghostbusters” reboot, which is slated to hit theaters by summer of 2016.

Joining McCarthy is Alison Janney, Jude Law, Jason Statham, Bobby Cannavale, and 50 Cent. The story of “Spy” revolves around McCarthy’s lead character, Susan Cooper, a desk-assigned CIA analyst who has long been waiting for the chance to work in the field.

McCarthy unexpectedly gets her chance to impress her bosses when the agency’s top operative, played by Jason Statham, gets compromised. She manages to convince her boss, played by Jude Law, to allow her to take his place on a dangerous mission against an arms dealer, played by Rose Byrne.

McCarthy's character has spent most of her career assisting Law who was an actual spy, according to Hollywood Life. She guides the agency’s operatives through ear pieces. When the need arises, she finally steps up and says, “I will do it!” Being underestimated in the agency despite having volunteered for a dangerous mission, her fellow agent just replied, “Okay, lunch lady.”

Alison Janney plays the role of the supervisor, and she tells McCarthy to go completely off the grid. To achieve this, she has to fully adapt to her new identity which happens to be a “cat lady.” To add to the movie its comedic touch, McCarthy is not able to avoid making direct contact with any of the targets as instructed by her supervisor.

Although “Spy” is not the first film that featured a collaboration between Feig and McCarthy, it was their first project that featured the actress in a sole lead role, as reported by Screen Rant. She was in a supporting role in “Bridesmaids” and shared the limelight with Sandra Bullock in “The Heat.”

The recently released first trailer for “Spy” received a lot of good reviews. It has a 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a total of 12 reviews so far.

“Spy” not only proves that McCarthy has evolved from being just a comedy actress but also gives the audience a peek into Feig’s directorial development since this upcoming action comedy seems to be his most cinematic project to date.

The trailer debuted at the 2015 Southwest Festival earlier this month. “Spy” will be hitting theaters in the United States on June 5, 2015.
