In spite of the fact that "The Vampire Diaries" have been signed up for a seventh season, things would never be the same in the hit TV series. Lead actress Nina Dobrev is leaving the show after this season and actor Ian Somerhalder seems to think that her decision dealt a major blow to the series.
Fans of the vampire TV series are still in shock over the confirmation that this season is the last time they would see Elena Gilbert. Dobrev confirmed her departure on the show via an Instagram post that sent many followers in frenzy.
According to reports, it was not just the fans who were shocked and in denial with her decision. Co-star and ex-boyfriend Somerhalder reportedly tried to change the actress' mind before she announced it to the other cast and crew members.
Hollywood Life reported that the 36-year-old actor spoke with his former flame to make her change her decision and stay in the show.
An insider revealed, "Ian met with Nina and pretty much begged her not to leave."
However, his action had nothing to do with their previous relationship. Somerhalder reportedly tried to stop Dobrev from leaving for the sake of their show.
The source continued, "Although her leaving does make things easier for him personally, he knows how important Nina is to the show. 'The Vampire Diaries' worked because of the chemistry and tension between him, Nina and Paul Wesley. The love triangle was what fans responded to. Without Nina, Ian is very concerned with the direction the show will take."
While producers of the show confirmed Dobrev's departure, they have not issued any statement on how the show would proceed without her character and it remains to be seen how Elena Gilbert's story in the series would end.
The insider also revealed that Somerhalder also considered leaving the show. He added, "Ian's concerned the show is a sinking ship and is looking to make his own exit."
However, Somerhalder has yet to address reports that he is also quitting the show.
Speculations circulated that part of the reason the actress is leaving has something to do with her ex-boyfriend's engagement to Nikki Reed. Despite their break-up years ago, Dobrev reportedly clung to the hope that she would get back with Somerhalder, said IB Times.
Now that the actor who plays Damon in the series has moved on and is soon to tie the knot, the actress was reportedly crushed and decided to leave.
Meanwhile, some reports noted that Reed is happy the lead actress is leaving. Somerhalder's fiancée is reportedly relieved that she could "now visit her fiancé on set and not worry about any awkwardness," reported The Hollywood Life.
