iMac 5K Retina Review, Release Date & Specs: Upgrade Confirmed, 8K Display Out This Year? [Rumors]

Apple has always been extremely secretive about its upcoming products but per reports, one of the Cupertino-based company's partner firms may have just confirmed an upgraded iMac with enhanced specs pegged for 2015.

According to a new report by MacRumors, Reddit notes that the LG Display Blog has revealed a new iMac with 8K display.

"It has become clear that Japan is planning to launch an 8K SHV test broadcast and then promptly restructure the UHD service. Apple has also announced that they will release the 'iMac 8K' with a super-high resolution display later this year. Korea is also preparing to offer an 8K service demonstration at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. LG Display displayed a new beacon of the 8K era by revealing their 98-inch 8K Color Prime Ultra HDTV at CES 2015."

The publication does note that Apple has not made any public announcements about the iMac since 2014 and its 8K displays have been rumored for release no earlier than 2016.

On the other hand, we know that the tech is available given that LG has unveiled its super-high-resolution 8K display, which it has dubbed, "Quad UHD 8K" and the display boasts of a 7,680 x 4,320 resolution. CNET notes that LG has previously stated that 8K displays are the future being "the highest resolution at which the human eye can discern, featuring a resolution of 7,680 by 4,320."

Apple's iMac

Apple's current iMac, 27-inches was provided a boosted super-resolution 5K display in October and features 14.7 million pixels and 5,120 x 2,880 resolution. The 5K display retails at $2,499.

While the news would be good news to those who want spectacular resolution, Apple Insider notes that it's an unusual move for Apple took upgrade its technology so quickly with such intensity. "That Apple would upgrade the iMac so quickly to an even higher resolution screen seems unusual. It's also odd for a partner the caliber of LG to publicly reveal future Apple product plans before the company itself decides to make an announcement," wrote the tech portal.

It could be that LG has been contracted by Apple to work on a 8K screen as a follow up to the existing Mac, which is what it accidentally revealed to the public. As of this report, LG has taken down the comment regarding the iMac with 8K display.

While the news hasn't been officially verified by Apple, LG is a pretty legitimate source of information so it's definitely something to look forward to.

Stay tuned for more.
