Fans of the 1996 slasher film, "Scream," which featured Drew Barrymore and Neve Campbell, is coming back to the screen. However, the adaptation would see the story rolled out as a TV series.
The MTV-produced thriller show is determined to replicate the success of the hit movie into the TV screen. According to IGN, the series would incorporate "the 'rules' of the slasher movie" for it to be faithful with what made the first film a success.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the TV show's plot would center on a small town that has been affected "after a cyberbullying incident results in a brutal murder, with the shocking violence stirring up memories of a killing spree from the past that has haunted some, intrigued others and maybe just inspired a new killed."
While the plot might seem quite similar to the movie of the same name, it has been reported that there would be some major departures from the original film. The trailer, which was debuted at the MTV Movie Awards, showed what fate awaits some of the characters in the upcoming series.
However, what was noticeable is the absence of the iconic "Ghostface" mask that has been part of every "Scream" movie that came out.
In October 2014, IGN published an article confirming that the mask is not part of the upcoming TV show. According to an email from R.J. Torbet of Fun World, the company that produces the mask, he was informed that it would not see the light of day in the series.
"Please not that I had been in communication with TWC regarding this and they have informed me that, as of now and during the initial launch, 'Ghostface' is not involved in the new format," said Torbert.
He added, "They also indicated that because of this direction it does not mean that 'Ghostface' will not be involved at a later date. We believe 'Scream' is 'Ghostface,' and 'Ghostface' is 'Scream.'"
Bella Thorne would play the cameo role Drew Barrymore had in the original Wes Craven film, said Screen Rant. Other cast members include Bex Taylor-Klaus, Carlson Young, John Karna, Connor Weil, and Willa Fitzgerald.
Taylor-Klaus replaced Amy Forsyth for the role Audrey. Meanwhile, Jason Wiles has been casted to replace Joel Gretsch for the role of the town Sheriff.
Even the opening date of the TV series has been changed. It was initially scheduled for a Halloween release in October but was recently moved.
"Scream: The TV Series" would be shown in MTV starting June 30, 2015.
