Home Design Tips & Inspiration on Instagram

The social networking giant, Instagram, has taken the world of the netizens by storm since its launch back in October of 2010. The web-and-mobile based and photo/video-sharing platform had its "instant shot" at success with its meteoric rise in terms of the number of monthly active users, which now stands at more than 300 million as of December 2014. It is used by more than 75 million users every day -- that's some mind-boggling numbers right there.

Instagram, a portmanteau of the words "instant" and "telegram", has been the go-to app for people to share just about anything under the sun, not the least of which are their "shelfies" -- selfies of your stuff on a shelf, e.g. kitchen shelf or book shelf.

Tiffany J. Davis, on her Trulia Blog, did a good job compiling a list of some of the most home-design forward Instagrammers. Let's check out three from the line, which features interesting shelfies for our very own design inspiration.

Schoolhouse Electric

This Portland-based design team is a creative factory of iconic lighting, furnishings and tools for productive living. Their Instagram posts are teeming with some nice shelfies that would make you want to take one for yourself.

They incorporate lighting fixtures as an integral part of the design, departing them from their usual practical use of illumination. "Consider lamps part of your shelf vignette and not just the things that light it," says Tiffany.

Trnk NYC

Whoever said that home interior design is exclusive to the fair sex, simply hasn't heard of Trnk NYC. They are friends, roommates, former co-workers, and just two design junkies who just want nothing but to create this venue for masculine design, and champion male domesticity, in the process -- that's some awesome testament to male power!

But that's not to say that women cannot gate crash their design party.

"The style portal and online boutique bills itself as a destination for 'masculine' design. In truth, anyone looking to upgrade his or her space should take note," Tiffany attests.

Spartan Shop

We know the Spartan people, they definitely are the no-frills type. And, the Spartan Shop shows photos of their collection that features clean arrangement in the design, the use of practical objects and just, basically, less of those unnecessary what-nots.

Tiffany invites you to "wander this artful Austin, TX, shop's feed for vignettes of practical household objects styled with an "objet d'art" vibe.

"True to name, owner Currie Person is anything but fussy," she said.
