'Captain Marvel' Cast, Update & Release Date: Superhero Movie To Feature 'Human Drama,' Angelina Jolie To Direct? [Rumors]

Superhero movies are no strangers to a star-studded cast. Just look at the crew of Marvel's "The Avengers." However, it seems that an upcoming superhero movie is planning to have both an all-star cast and crew. Word is out that the new "Captain Marvel" movie has set its sight on Angelina Jolie - not to take part as the lead actress but as the director.

Ever since news came out that Marvel is working on its first female-driven superhero film, speculations on the cast, crew, and plot have been circulating. Now, Collider first revealed that the studio is looking to lock in the "Tomb Raider" star to helm its upcoming movie.

It was initially reported that the Hollywood actress, who successfully directed "Unbroken," is being considered to direct either "Captain Marvel" or Warner Bros.' "Wonder Woman," said We Got This Covered. This came after Michelle MacLaren, who was supposed to helm the Warner Bros.' superhero film, left.

With Patty Jenkins now on board to direct "Wonder Woman," the only option left for Jolie is Marvel's film.

The Academy Award-winning actress is set to direct "Africa" with husband Brad Pitt as lead. However, it seems that the movie's production experienced some setback due to financial concerns. If the movie gets canceled, that would leave the actress free to direct Marvel's film that has been scheduled to come out in 2018.

Initial reports said that the studio has already offered the actress a $20 million payout if she accepts the job, said Screen Rant.

Many fans wondered how Jolie would treat the movie, if she accepts the role. Her previous experience in helming "Unbroken" showed her versatility in handling different kinds of stories ranging from "sports drama, war drama, and survivalist story."

With these in mind, it could mean that the upcoming "Captain Marvel" would be one that is more realistic in its approach. Having Jolie on board could lead to Marvel coming out with the first ever superhero film that focuses on "human drama" more than the cosmic aspect of the story.

However, it remains to be seen if this is the direction the upcoming film would take. For now, there has been no confirmation from either Marvel Studio or Jolie if the rumors are true.

Marvel has already approached two writers to pen the script for the movie. Nicole Perlman was part of the team that wrote "Guardians of the Galaxy," while Meg LeFauve wrote Pixar's "Inside Out," said an earlier report in Realty Today.

"Captain Marvel" is scheduled to hit theaters on November 2018.
