With Android 5.1 Lollipop update slowly rolling out to Nexus devices, other Android users wonder when they could get their hands on the first version of the highly anticipated upgrade to their smartphones' operating systems. It seems that for some Verizon and AT&T users, the wait is finally over as the two companies announced that Android 5.0 Lollipop is now available to select devices.
According to GSM Arena, Verizon announced that the download is now available for their subscribers who have the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Once updated, users would be able to see the new material design that comes with the upgrade. It brings to the unit a "new lock screen experience, floating buttons everywhere and a revamped recent apps menu."
Moreover, the update integrates well with Samsung's TouchWiz UI overlay that makes the visual experience better for the users as it offers more fluid animations and brighter colors. Verizon first made the update available to Samsung's Galaxy Note 4.
Meanwhile, AT&T announced that the update is arriving to not one but three devices, said another report from GSM Arena. The LG G2, Samsung Galaxy Alpha, and Galaxy S5 Active would now all be able to download and install the update.
While both the Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy S5 Active are from Samsung, the updates differ for both units. In the Galaxy Alpha, the update only takes up 1GB and the version uses Android 5.0.2.
The Galaxy Alpha S5 Active would eat up 1.4GB and would run on an earlier version, the Android 5.0.
While the same upgrade affects the units in different ways, Android 5.0 Lollipop still brings in the same material design components which many users have been eager to see, noted CNET. It also comes in with an added protection for the phones in the form of the smart lock.
However, the update does not do anything much with carrier apps and even bug fixes that some users of these two units were expecting.
With LG G2, the update is only 725MB in size and would run on the Android 5.0.2 version for the OS as well as the D80030f version of the software.
Once updated, the new OS takes away the AT&T Code Scanner, Beats Music, browser bar, and Famigo.
While the update has been rolled out to these devices already, it might take time before it becomes available to the other gadgets. However, one could manually check the settings every once in a while to see if the update is finally available.
