'Game of Thrones' Season 5: Series End Date Revealed? Producers Talk Season 6 & Remaining Time

As the fifth season of "Game of Thrones" begins, the team behind the hit HBO show teased audiences about the series' future as well as when it could possibly end.

During a recent sit down with GOT executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Variety reports that discussions have been on going with regards to the lifespan of TV show based on the "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series.

When asked about how long they foresee the series, Benioff shares that writing for the sixth season has just begun and adds, "We could go another four years - and we could come up with good stories - but the one thing that really got us excited when we pitched this to HBO was that this isn't just a regular series. It's a real story with a beginning, a middle and an end."

He continued to share that an idea is already in place for how GOT will end and "we're barreling toward it. So the idea that we're going to try and stretch it out by an extra couple years just because we're all having a good time doing it and people are making money off it just feels like it would be a betrayal."

Both Benioff and Weiss agree that they'd like to end the series before it reaches the point where it's more about profits than the actual story.

"Game of Thrones" Season Six

In addition, the pair also spoke about the next season. According to Benioff:

"Season five is still very much within the books for the most part. The very first scene of the season and the very last scene of the season are book scenes. It's more season six that's going to be diverging a bit.

We've had a lot of conversations with George, and he makes a lot of stuff up as he's writing it. Even while we talk to him about the ending, it doesn't mean that that ending that he has currently conceived is going to be the ending when he eventually writes it."

In addition, they shared that any editing decision made for the series has always been done because they believed it would be best for the series.

"Winds of Winter" Release Date

Currently, author George RR Martin is still working on the latest installment for the book series which the GOT show follows. The fifth season follows Books 4 and 5 (A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons). With the sixth season beginning development and Martin has provided no deliver date for "Winds of Winter," there is a great possibility that the hit show will spoil the book series.

Speaking at the Oxford Union, the team has been in talks with Martin about this issue. They're all on the same page about where the stories will end up and while they wish there were no spoilers, "The show must go on.. and that's what we're going to do," he concluded.
