Popular BBC TV series "Doctor Who" may be heading to Hollywood, per leaked Sony emails.
According to leaked emails (appearing on WikiLeaks) between Sony executives, The Telegraph reports that Danny Cohen, the BBC director of television, believes there is "tremendous interest" in a silver screen project.
The emails dated last January were between Sony's president of International Production Andrea Wong and the company's chief executive Michael Lynton.
"He (Cohen) said that while there has been tremendous interest (and pressure from BBC Worldwide) to do a Dr Who film, the show runners feel very clear that they don't want to do one at this moment," wrote Wong on Jan 23, 2014.
The email added that within the next few months, the show running team would develop an eight year timeline that maps the direction and future of the "Doctor Who" brand, wherein "a film will certainly be a part of that timeline."
The communication also emphasized that the show's team have resisted the plans and are "very hot under the collar" that their views on the project are falling on deaf ears, highlights the electronic communications.
In another email, Wong wrote: "[Cohen] said that the creative team on the show have been having the movie conversation with BBC Worldwide in recent weeks and are very hot under the collar that their position on it is not being listened to or accepted..."
Executive Producer Steven Moffat expressed his opinion last month on the rumored big screen film. "I don't think there is [a film]. No one has ever squared the circle on that. How do we do this?," quoted Entertainment Weekly (via Mirror UK) of Moffat.
"How do we do it without leaching form the television series - which we're not allowed to do, because Doctor Who is public funded?
If it's going to be a different Doctor, are we going to try and sell two Doctors at the same time?"
Sony Hacking Scandal
Before 2014 came to a close, Japanese electronics and entertainment firm Sony was hacked where in a third party software was able to download a massive collection of data without being detected. Since then, approximately 175,000 emails and 30,000 documents from Sony Pictures Entertainment have been shared on the WikiLeaks website.
Earlier this week WikiLeaks debuted a searchable portal for all the leaked materials -- including all emails, content, documents and memos.
